Joburg Heritage Day gigs
September 23, 2009

By Munyaradzi Vomo

Many a braai will be sizzling as we brace ourselves for yet another national holiday in which we celebrate our cultural diversity.

Yet tomorrow, Heritage Day, is about much more than just meat-and-meets, it is an acknowledgement and appreciation of our differences.

Tonight a dinner and dance is being held at the Pantanassa Church Hall (cnr Glenhove and Fifth sts) in Melrose as a fundraiser for St Nicholas Orthodox Church.

Harry Talas and a jazz quartet, comprising the talented pianist Roland Moses, drummer Andrew Steenkamp and trombonist John Davies, will be the evening's entertainment. Tel: 083 241 5346.

The most interesting show tomorrow could easily be the House Of Hunger Poetry Slam at the Alliance Francaise (Zoo Lake, 17 Lower Park Drive, cnr Kerry Rd, Parkview). Expect some of the best poets, including Sir Black (Ghana), Comrade Fatso (Zimbabwe), Outspoken (Zimbabwe), Antonio Lyons (US) and our own Lebo Mashile and Gcina Mhlope. Tel: 073 081 5194.

If that is not so "hip" for you then the Soweto Festival, which opens tomorrow, could do the trick. The festival, which runs until Sunday, will be held at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus.

Since most people link eating to the public day, it is only right to have the award-winning celebrity chef Citrum Khumalo present his delights in Shoprite Taste Sensation. It's your chance et to meet the man we got to know through his food shows on SABC.

Speaking of television, e.tv's Rhythm City will also be available to all the Rhythm Citizens at the Soweto Festival.

Apart from learning how the programme is made, the stars of the show will be there to share their experiences with their fans. Make sure your camera's batteries are fully charged. Tel: 011 646 5630.

Okay, so maybe those gigs are not quite your scene and you are more into a party mode.

If that is the case, then you might want to try the Gold Reef Theme Park, where rockers Prime Circle will be the main feature for the day.

While you can take your family for the rides as early as 9.30am, the band will only play from 1pm at The Town Square. Tel: 011 803 0030.

The Bohemian (5 Park Rd, cnr Menton Rd and Park St, Ridgemond, Auckland Park) also hosts a Heritage Day Party. Expect to hear from the likes of Juggernaught, Rambling Bones, Submachine and Japan & I. The show starts at 3pm. Tel: 011 482 1725.

The Black Dahlia,(cnr Ravenswood and Trichardt rds, Boskburg) will host Deity, Undefined, Sick Day September, Drawn red and The Vulcan Nerve Pinch. For R30 you get to see these groups from 7pm. Tel: 072 725 7254.
