Seven films will play for free at this year's week-long Spanish Film Festival, which began on Friday. The films being screened are:
Caotica Ana: A captivating story of love and reincarnation, this film pays homage to the role of women through the ages. All the paintings in the film by "Ana" are actually the work of director Julio Medem's sister, Ana, who died on the eve of a big exhibition of her work.
Bajo las Estrellas (Beneath the Stars): This film features an opportunistic professional trumpet player who returns home to Navarre when he learns his father is dying. Selfish in the extreme, Benito (Alberto San Juan) actually connects with his younger brother and learns something about himself in the process.
La Zona: Residents of an enclosed neighbourhood in the middle of Mexico are shocked by a violent crime. For one resident in particular the drama is taken up a notch when he encounters a lone child who escaped the event and is hiding out within the neighbourhood's borders.
Mataharis: This story, about three women who live in Madrid, focuses on their personal stories to tell a bigger one. They may be private detectives who delve into the secrets of others, but they are all clueless about their own issues.
Obaba: In a mythical region in northern Spain, a young film-maker struggles to capture the feel of the area, but instead discovers something about himself.
Un Franco 14 Pesetas: The film explores the topic of emigration from the emigrants' point of view.
Yo soy la Juani: Two women leave their small town and their boring boyfriends for the bright lights of Madrid.
Entrance to the Spanish Film Festival at V&A Waterfront Nouveau is free and tickets can be collected at the cinema an hour before each show starts; until Thursday at 5.30pm and 8pm. All films are in Spanish, with English subtitles. Schedules and synopses are available at www.sterkinekor.com
