Katrina Kaif reconnects with her teenage self for Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, which opened on Friday. Glamsham's Sreya Basu caught up with the actress to find out how she felt about working with a much younger co-star...
You have always worked with older actors like Salman Khan (Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya), Akshay Kumar (Namastey London and Singh is Kinng) and Govinda (Partner). How does it feel to work with talented newcomer Ranbir Kapoor?
The only thing that irks me is working with someone who is ill-prepared and not passionate about his work. Bottom line - age doesn't matter when you are working with talented people. Ranbir and I are buddies and have much in common, like the fact that we started our career at almost the same time, we are film buffs and passionate about cinema. And, to some extent, we are crazy and share the same kind of energy. We had a blast shooting for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.
Rajkumar Santoshi is a serious film-maker with hits like Damini, Ghayal and Lajja; why do you think he chose you for this comedy?
The film is wacky and energetic and he wanted his characters to maintain that vibe. He believed we (Ranbir and I) had what he was looking for to create this world.
On second thoughts, it could be that he knew I could work 22 hours non-stop (laughs).
Given your roles of late, you seem to be partial to comedy. Is this because of the offers coming your way or do you want to conquer this particular genre?
I love comedy and that's why you see me in films by Anees Bazmee and David Dhawan. I am not that type who will say: "Okay, I've had enough... I don't want more of this stuff!" If that was the case, I would have never got the chance to be a part of a Rajkumar Santoshi's comedy. He has an unusual sense of comedy and I loved Andaaz Apna Apna. By the same token, my character in New York was far from bubbly and I have a serious role in Prakash Jha's Rajneeti.
During the shooting of the movie, there was a lot of speculation about your relationship with Ranbir and Deepika Padukone (Ranbir's girlfriend) and Salman Khan (Katrina's beau). How do you handle such controversies?
It becomes easier to handle controversies when you are a part of the film industry. I just take them with a smile.
Salman Khan said your onscreen chemistry with Akshay Kumar is better than your chemistry with him. Do you feel the same?
I think I should leave that to the public to decide. What do you think (smiles)?
Do you have any plans to explore Hollywood like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan?
No, no. I love where I am at the moment, I am happy with Indian films. If given the chance, I will act in regional films as well. But it is a "no" to Hollywood for me.
Be sure to keep an eye out for Katrina Kaif in De Dana Dan and Rajneeti.
