GIG OF THE WEEK
Mari Boine
Assembly, Cape Town
Capetonians are spoilt for choice, with the biggest selection of events in the entire country this week.
However, something particularly atypical is a once-off performance by Norwegian musician Mari Boine, with Madosini and the Abaqondisi Brothers, at the Assembly on Wednesday.
Boine is from the Arctic regions of Norway, also known as Samiland. Her music is often a fusion of ancestral Sami and folk music, but also draws on jazz and electronica.
Mandosini is popularly called The Queen of Pondoland or The Veteran, widely known as a musician, dancer and storyteller, and for her proficiency at the uhadi (berimbau), the isitololo (mouth harp) and the umrhubhe (mouthbow).
The Abaqondisi Brothers is a 12-piece a capella group from the Kaya Mandi Township outside Stellenbosch. Mandosini and The Abaqondisi Brothers have collaborated on Boine's new album, Sterna Paradisea, which is the reason behind the performance.
