The Cape Town International Jazz Festival, now in its 11th year, is looking healthy after announcing some of the artists that will perform next year on April 3 and 4 at the CTICC.
Festival directors Billy Domingo and Rashid Lombard revealed 19 of the musicians who will perform and the latest statistics on the festival. Showing that beating the credit crunch is possible, they say: "It is vital to keep the arts alive during times of economic depression."
This year the festival was plagued by uncertainty with the pullout of Standard Bank as a massive sponsor, but it seems it has recovered as Angolan company Ritek confirmed its position as the Gold sponsor again.
All sponsors and investors present confirmed their support, including the City of Cape Town, with executive deputy mayor Ian Neilson saying: "2010 is going to be a very great year for Cape Town," and highlighting the need for local sponsors to step in and support the arts.
The festival continues its training and development agenda, including an arts journalism course, master classes and school workshops.
The community concert which takes place before the festival in Greenmarket Square will also continue and highlight the square's 300th anniversary.
Last year the festival contributed R761 million to the national GDP and R572m to the Western Cape's GDP, creating 2 750 jobs during its run.
The following artists are just a taster of what to expect next year, with the remaining 21 to be announced in February: McCoy Tyner, Regina Carter, Rachelle Ferrell, Toots Thielemans (Belgium), Tete Mbambisa, Jonathan Butler, Rick Braun, Richard Elliott, Amanda Tiffin, The Bokani Dyer Trio (Botswana/SA), Brooklyn Funk Essentials (US), The Glenn Robertson Jazz Band, Iridium Project, Kesivan Naidoo and the Lights (SA/Sweden/Switzerland), Mezzoforte (Iceland), Michaela Rabitz and Robert Pawlik Quartet (Austria), Musa Manzini, Sammy Hartman Project with Robbie Jansen and Ezra Ngcukana, Selaelo Selota, Stix Hojeng and Vusi Mahlasela.
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival runs from April 2 to 4 at the CTICC. Tickets: R330-R485. Info: www.capetownjazzfest.com, Tel: 083 915 8000.
