The DVD dossier - Snow White, Tinker Bell
November 26, 2009

By Theresa Smith

Created more than 50 years apart, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure stand at opposite ends of animation technique.

Meticulously animated by hand, Snow White was the film that launched Disney's foray into full- length animated features.

It has a deceptively simple style and palette, which becomes quite surreal in the forest.

Tinker Bell's straight-to-dvd film is the height of computer- generated imagery, with gorgeous background detail. Where it does pale in comparison to Snow White is when it is blown up for a big-screen cinematic experience. Cleaned up for Blu-Ray, Snow White still looks amazing and would probably still work on the big screen, but some of Tink's characters look rather two- dimensional and wooden.

Based on the fairy tale and adapted by Walt Disney himself, Snow White features the quintessential damsel in distress, who sings Some Day My Prince Will Come and is rescued by the handsome prince.

Tinker Bell, on the other hand, is the feisty fairy doing the saving, though she needs a little help from her friend Terence in this film with an original storyline.

Yet, kids respond equally positively to both films, because it comes down to telling them a story they can imagine themselves into.
