There is growing interest around De Dana Dan, Priyadarshan's next offering after Billu. Famed for his rib-tickling comedies, the director has buffs salivating over his latest star-studded cast of Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Suniel Shetty and Sameera Reddy.
Kumar and Kaif are huge drawcards, as their previous films together (Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Welcome and Singh is Kinng) all proved to be box-office success stories - and that works in Priyadarshan's favour.
And Kumar is quite chuffed about the movie. On the lack of hype around it, the actor jokes that that could be a marketing ploy in itself.
"Besides, that was the idea since De Dana Dan has the perfect packaging. People know what to expect from it," said Kumar, who last worked with Priyadarshan in Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007).
He added: "The film has gorgeous actresses, rib-tickling humour, catchy songs and it is an overall entertainer. In fact, it speaks for itself - there is no reason for a sales pitch. All that is left is for the audience to offer the final verdict."
At a time when most of his recent films, including Blue, have gone into overdrive in reaching out to audiences, shouldn't the promotional campaign around De Dana Dan be more aggressive?
"As I pointed out, this movie will draw out fans. At the end of the day, it all depends on the production house. Some producers are prepared to fork out cash to promote their films, whereas others don't even turn up for press events. And then there are those who give as much to their films as they can without shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to expenses."
On whether De Dana Dan is a laugh-a-thon from start to finish, Kumar smiled: "It is an out-and-out comedy. Priyadarshan's style of capturing humour on camera is unique. De Dana Dan is funnier, more fast-paced and flamboyant than his previous offerings. You can't sneeze or blink as missing one shot means you will be missing out. And I hope everyone switches off their cellphones and takes a bathroom break before it starts as there is no interval."
