Big local treat for Bollywood fans

Top Bollywood talent Shaan, who has been voted India's top playback singer for three consecutive years, is scheduled to perform at the Durban Arena at the International Convention Centre at 7pm on Saturday.

Titled Shaan, Live in Concert the event will also feature Javed Ali, who won the International Indian Film Award for best male playback singer, for his hit song, Jodha Akbar; and June Banerjee.

Thirty-seven-year-old Shaan was the host for the popular show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, from 2000 to 2006 and also for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs.

Born into a Bengali family, he is the son of the late music director Manas Mukherjee and brother of singer Sagarika.

As a child, he began his career by singing advertising jingles and went on to sing cover versions of popular songs. In the 1989 movie Parinda, when he was only a teen, he sang a single line in the song, Kitni Hai Pyari Pyari Dosti Hamari.

His career began in 1995 with his first release, the remix album called Q-funk. In 2000 he won the MTV Asia Music Award for best solo album for Tanha Dil.

Three years later, Shaan launched his album Aksar, which was again hugely successful. It contained songs featuring international stars such as Blue, Mel C and Samira Said.


Apart from his albums, Shaan has sung playback vocals for various Bollywood films, including Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai, Jhankaar Beats, Lakshya, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Dhoom, Dus and Salaam Namaste.

Javed Ali, son of noted qawali singer Ustad Hamid Hussian, who adopted the surname of his guru, famous ghazal singer Ghulam Ali, made his Bollywood debut as a singer in 2000, with Beti No 1. He went on to perform in such films as Paagalpan, Haasil, Chameli and Kyun...! Ho Gaya Na.

However, he started climbing the ladder of success some years years later with Ek Din Teri Raahon from the film, Naqaab.

June Banerjee is an upcoming playback singer who has worked on the films Dujone, Paran Jaay Jaliya Re, Sankat City and Bhalobasa Jindabad.

  • Tickets for Shaan, Live in Concert can be bought at Computicket outlets. They cost R120 (unreserved), R200, R350 and R500.

    On Sunday, the show moves to Carnival City in Johannesburg. That performance starts at 5.30pm and ticket prices start at R150.
