Non-profit organisation Hope for the Future has launched a campaign aimed at making Easter special for hundreds of children from Blikkiesdorp, a community hard-hit by poverty.

They are calling on the support of local businesses, individuals, and community members to contribute through donations of fish, onions, spices, marshmallows, hot-cross buns or funds.

Hope for the Future then aims to visit Blikkiesdorp this weekend, where they will distribute bowls of pickled fish together with a hot-cross bun and two marshmallows per child, for around 400 children.

Hope for the Future founder Vanessa Nelson said: “As Christians, this is an important time for us. It’s about what we do for people, the children where parents can’t provide for them, we cannot turn a blind eye. Things like pickled fish, marshmallows, or hot cross buns are traditional food and treats that make the day special but not everyone is able to afford it. Last year, we prepared 20 pieces of snoek to distribute.

“Some children don’t know the taste of a marshmallow or hot-cross bun. We go out to our poverty-stricken communities, because being privileged means nothing if we forget those who aren’t and Blikkiesdorp is a forgotten place.”

In terms of donations, Nelson said this could done by adding something extra when shopping for your own child, it can be a food voucher or a monetary donation which the organisation can provide a tax certificate for ahead of the end of the financial year.

To assist, Nelson can be contacted on 076 073 6777.
