Durban — The driver who allegedly crashed into several vehicles in Phoenix was arrested and has appeared in court facing charges of drunken, reckless and negligent driving.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “Police in Phoenix have arrested a 32-year-old suspect for drunken driving and reckless and negligent (driving) following an incident in which four vehicles collided on the Phoenix Highway and Rydalvale on Tuesday, September 10.”
Netshiunda said the suspect appeared in court on Wednesday.
KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said a truck ploughed through five motor vehicles along the Phoenix Highway and Rydalvale.
Naidoo said KZN VIP Medics and security services responded to the scene to find the wreckage involving five light motor vehicles and one heavy-duty truck and trailer.
He said after colliding with the vehicles, it is believed the truck driver tried to drive off but was stopped by other road users and handcuffed awaiting the SAPS or metro police.
Naidoo said KZN VIP Medics treated the injured patients and took them to medical facilities.
“Circumstances leading up to the crash cannot be confirmed at this stage but no fatalities were reported,” Naidoo said.
This is how Facebook users reacted to the incident:
Divesh Ramkissoon said: “The second he decided to flee the scene rendered him guilty in my books.”
Elias Ntindarh was thankful there were no fatalities and that KZN VIP Protection Services and Medics were on time to help assist the patients. “And lastly how heartless is that truck driver to try and flee the scene? While knowing what he has done and the lives that he almost took …”
Crystal Bianca Chetty said: “We will only know who was at fault once an investigation is completed. It could have been the driver, truck, damaged road etc. We can only assume. KZN VIP Protection Services was first on scene so I’m sure a criminal case was opened for further investigation.”
