Durban — The police constable charged with the murder of his 70-year-old mother appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The matter was postponed to September for further investigation.

Lungisani Xaba is alleged to have assaulted Greta Xaba with a wooden plank that had nails in it on May 6, just two days before Mother’s Day, in KwaDabeka, just outside Pinetown.

Xaba remains behind bars after having been refused bail previously by magistrate Gwendolyn Robinson.

He was arrested in KwaDabeka on May 7 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, however, the charge was changed to murder on May 8 when Xaba’s mother died.

During his bail application Xaba had indicated that he would plead not guilty.
