Durban — Embattled eThekwini ActionSA councillor Musa Kubheka's political career seems to be back on track after the party dropped charges against him.
Kubheka confirmed to the Daily News on Thursday that the matter has been concluded but referred the paper to the party’s national spokesperson, Lerato Ngobeni, who said that after a long hearing Kubheka was found not guilty of pointing a firearm at another party member.
She said this meant Kubheka would continue as chairperson of the party's caucus in eThekwini Municipality.
Kubheka was hauled before a disciplinary hearing by his party after allegedly pointing a firearm at party councillor Busi Radebe in July. Radebe also refused to comment, saying they were told not to comment on the matter. Both councillors were at a party provincial executive meeting and after differences emerged between them on a particular topic, Kubheka allegedly pulled out his gun and pointed it in Radebe's direction.
An insider within the party said the party leadership had “difficulty” with the charges against Kubheka, since Radebe had not laid a criminal complaint against him with police. He said that strengthened Kubheka's claims that the charges amounted to a ploy to get him out of his chairperson position, which he resigned from immediately after the party took action against him.
He had been in the position, which he assumed in January, for only six months, after the dismissal of Dr Makhosi Khoza, who was fired for allegedly working with the ANC in contravention of her party’s position that she had to vote with the DA-led coalition during the election of the mayor after the 2021 local government elections.
Although Kubheka initially said he voluntarily stepped down as caucus chairperson, it later emerged that he was pushed out and immediately charged internally.
