Durban — AmaZulu Football Club chairperson Sandile Zungu reminded his players that they were loved and should not suffer alone when they could get support from the club.

Zungu was speaking at the club’s 90th birthday celebration held at Moses Mabhida Stadium’s People’s Park Café on Friday.

He said even if players left the team for greener pastures, they should know that “this is home”.

When Zungu arrived at the celebration, it was evident he was close to the players. The room was full of laughter, and you could feel the love between the players and the supporters.

Zungu went on to greet everyone and held what seemed to be deep conversations with each of his players. You could hear the loud laughter of the players over the music playing. After talking to the players, he went on to greet supporters.

Before cutting the big cake, which spelt out the letters “AFC” in 3D, and which was surrounded by Champagne bottles and glasses, he told players that in the near future the table should be filled with cups (awards).

“This table should be filled with cups that we must collect. By playing in the semi-finals you’ll rewrite the history of AmaZulu. It has been more than 10 years since AmaZulu FC last played in the semi-finals. We ended up losing to Wits in the Nedbank Cup final in 2010,” he said.

Zungu encouraged his players to dedicate themselves and play well.

He said: “You know there are people who do not eat when the team loses, there are people who fight with their partners because of how the team performs, and some people sleep with broken hearts when the team loses. It is important we do well and dedicate ourselves.”

He said the way players carried themselves was important and they had to know that their fans went the extra mile to find out about them.

“There are people who will want to know about your life, what you eat, what you like – basically, everything about your life. They are not snooping around, but it’s because they love you.

“May the founders of AmaZulu FC look after the team wherever they are.”
