Durban — The Wyebank Garden Refuse Site has been reopened, two weeks after the Mount Edgecombe site was reopened.
The two sites were closed in early September because they had reached total capacity.
The municipality said that the Wyebank Garden Refuse Site reopened on Friday, October 7.
“Residents are permitted to dispose of one bakkie load not exceeding 750kg or ¾ ton of garden refuse per week, free of charge at any Cleansing and Solid Waste (CSW) garden refuse site as per waste by-laws,” the municipality said.
“Any excess loads of garden refuse can be taken to the Mariannhill Landfill Site where disposal costs will apply if waste is above 100kg.
“No contractors are allowed to dispose of garden refuse at the Wyebank site. However, they can use designated landfill sites as stipulated in the city’s waste by-laws,” the municipality added.
Two weeks ago, the municipality announced that the Mount Edgecombe garden refuse site had reopened.
“Residents are permitted to dispose of one bakkie load not exceeding 750kg or ¾ ton of garden refuse per week, free of charge at any of the Cleansing and Solid Waste garden refuse sites,” the statement read.
“Garden waste contractors are permitted to dispose of five loads per company per day at designated garden refuse sites.”
The statement added that any excess loads are to be taken directly to the Buffelsdraai Landfill Site.
The municipality had advised residents that the Mount Edgecombe and Wyebank garden sites had been temporarily closed as both sites had reached full capacity.
It said the municipality asked residents to use the Mariannhill and Buffelsdraai landfill sites for their garden refuse disposal in the interim.
A process to clear the closed sites was under way. A notice will be issued once the sites are cleared and open for public use.
The municipality added that if residents needed more information, they could contact the Cleansing and Solid Waste helpline on 031 311 8804.
