Durban – A man was shot after allegedly stealing a bag from a car parked outside a fire department in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that charges of theft out of a motor vehicle and attempted murder were opened at Pietermaritzburg police station for investigation.

Ngcobo alleged that on Wednesday morning, a 35-year-old man parked his vehicle on Macfarlane Street in Pietermaritzburg. At 11am the alarm went off and he went to investigate.

“He noticed an unknown man fleeing the scene with his bag. He chased after the suspect and subsequently shot and injured the man. The 25-year-old suspect was found in possession of the bag. He was taken to the hospital for medical attention,” Ngcobo said.

“It is alleged that the suspect broke the window to gain access and stole the bag.”

Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said that shortly before lunchtime on Wednesday, their Pietermaritzburg crews were dispatched to Pietermaritz Street for a shooting incident.

“On crews’ arrival, they found a 25-year-old male who had allegedly attempted to steal a motor vehicle outside the fire department,” Robertson said.

It was alleged that the suspect was spotted by a security guard who intervened and the man was shot and sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“He was stabilised on the scene by Midlands EMS paramedics before being transported to a local facility under police guard,” Robertson said.
