Durban — A 30-year-old man is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he fakes a kidnapping and carjacking ordeal to the police.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Monday, October 3, the man reported to Montclair police that he was hijacked by three unknown men while he was on South Coast Road in Rossburgh, south of Durban.

Gwala said the man stated that he was forced into the vehicle and was driven around for two hours before he was dropped off at a mall and charges of carjacking and kidnapping were opened for investigation.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in Dove Crescent, Montclair, Gwala said.

“After an intensive investigation, police discovered that the complainant was never at the shop where he alleged that he was hijacked and his vehicle was used in a business robbery at Brighton Beach,” Gwala said.

She said the suspect was arrested and will appear in court on Monday.

“Detectives are still investigating whether the suspect was involved in the Brighton Beach business robbery case,” Gwala said.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man appeared before the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after his arrest while attempting to open a case of carjacking after he allegedly robbed three men after offering them a lift.

On Tuesday KwaDabeka police arrested the suspect for allegedly robbing three men of their belongings.

Gwala said, according to information, all three victims were offered a lift by the suspect on Dumisani Makhaye Drive.

She said while in the car, the driver stopped the vehicle and drew a firearm.

“He demanded their belongings, but one of the victims managed to overcome the suspect who fled, leaving his vehicle behind. The trio drove the vehicle to the police station to report the matter and a case of armed robbery was opened for investigation at SAPS KwaDabeka,” Gwala said.

“The suspect was arrested when he arrived at the police station to open a false case of carjacking.”
