Durban — A man who hijacked and murdered a 53-year-old man was recently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years for carjacking.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on September 15, 2022, “the Pietermaritzburg High Court convicted and sentenced Jabulani Cebolenkosi Mfanafuthi Mpungose, 31, to life imprisonment for the murder of Dumsani Mfanafuthi Nxumalo, 53. He was further sentenced to 15 years for carjacking”.
On July 3, 2021, Nxumalo’s body was discovered by farm workers at Kranskop with gunshot wounds. It was revealed that the deceased was reported missing at Kranskop SAPS the previous day.
A case of murder was opened for investigation.
Mpungose was traced to Tongaat SAPS where he was detained for reckless and negligent driving as well as for driving under the influence of alcohol. When he was interviewed he confessed to hijacking and killing Nxumalo in Kranskop.
“Mpungose was convicted and sentenced after the court heard how he killed the man before he stole his bakkie and fled to oThongathi. His accomplices are still being sought by police,” Gwala said.
