Durban — Two suspects are due in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on a number of charges related to housebreakings.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Monday night, Chatsworth police arrested two suspects aged 28 and 33 at their informal dwelling at a settlement in Crossmoor, Chatsworth.

Police were conducting investigations as a result of a number of housebreakings in the precinct which led to the suspects’ home, she said.

“Police established that the suspects were in possession of various stolen items such as copper cables, copper pipes, brass prayer items and various power tools with an estimated street value of R55 000,” Gwala said.

“The accused will appear at the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court in due course on charges of contravention of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act, damage to essential infrastructure, contravention of the Second Hand Goods Act, carrying on a business as a dealer without being registered and being in possession of property suspected to be stolen.”

Acting station commander, Colonel Poolandran Moodley, commended the joint efforts made by the various units at the station to collectively apply their knowledge and investigative skills to ensure that the alleged perpetrators were arrested.

“Every effort will be made by the team to ensure that the suspects are linked to the burglaries, with investigators working closely with the prosecutors at court.

“Police are advising residents to keep records of household items, such as documenting serial numbers and taking photographs which can assist police when burglaries occur.”
