Durban — Two suspects appeared in court on Friday after being arrested on Thursday night for allegedly possessing suspected stolen property.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Thursday night police officers from the Chatsworth Task Team received information about a silver vehicle whose occupants were being sought following numerous cases of vehicle theft in Chatsworth and the surrounding areas.

Gwala said SAPS officers and Durban metro police officers conducting crime-prevention operations in the central business district spotted a vehicle with two occupants and a search was conducted.

She said that it was discovered that the vehicle was stolen in May 2022 in Pietermaritzburg.

“Police seized a number of car-breaking implements and cellphones allegedly belonging to the suspects which contained images of multiple vehicles being stripped and log books and licence discs for numerous vehicles,” Gwala said.

Gwala said the suspects, aged 31 and 47, appeared at the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on October 7 in connection with the alleged possession of suspected stolen property.

In addition, she said that the police were alerted by a vigilant security guard at a centre from where a white vehicle was stolen.

“The vehicle that was stolen at the centre was also recovered.”
