Durban — Warrants of arrest were issued on Tuesday for a Pietermaritzburg doctor and his wife who are facing fraud charges in the Pietermaritzburg Commercial Crimes Court.

Navind Dayanand is charged along with his company Daymed Private Hospital (Pty) Ltd, his wife, Nerupa Dayanand, Douglas Mpofu, Carla Domenica Louden and Yagasami Ronnie Perumal.

KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said only Mpofu and Perumal appeared in court, with an attorney for the Dayanands providing the court with a sick note, stating that they were unwell and could not attend. Louden’s attorney also advised the court of her inability to attend court as she was unwell.

Ramkisson-Kara said the warrants of arrest would stay until the next court date in February.

Ramkisson-Kara stated that the matter was adjourned for statements and for all the accused to appear in court.

According to Ramkisson-Kara, Dayanand faces charges of Personal Income Tax fraud and Value Added Tax (VAT) fraud amounting to R142 million and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) credit fraud with the potential prejudice of R637m to the SA Revenue Service (Sars).

The hospital is charged with Company Income Tax fraud, VAT fraud and PAYE credit fraud with an actual prejudice of approximately R37m to Sars and a potential prejudice of R498m for PAYE.

Ramkisson-Kara said Nerupa was the financial manager of the company.

“Mpofu and Louden, who are both tax practitioners, are alleged to have submitted returns to Sars on behalf of Daymed. Perumal is the internal bookkeeper at Daymed Hospital. The alleged offences range from the period 2012 to 2020,” said Ramkisson-Kara.
