Durban — Tragedy struck the Clare Estate area on Friday afternoon when a pupil died after being run over by a minibus taxi.
KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said a 10-year-old pupil was killed after being knocked down by a minibus taxi on Palmiet Road in Clare Estate on Friday afternoon.
He said KZN VIP Medics and other emergency services were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival established that when the pupil tried to cross the road, he was struck by a minibus taxi.
“As per witnesses the child became airborne and landed back onto the roadway with serious injuries. Sadly, nothing could be done to save the child’s life and he was declared deceased by medics on the scene,” Naidoo said.
“All emergency services were in attendance and we pass our sincere condolences to the family on their loss.”
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident and said Sydenham police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
Reacting to the incident, this is what Facebook users had to say:

Trishorn Noel Naidoo said: “RIP. Condolences to the family.
“This school should have a scholar patrol. This is outside Palmiet Primary School on Clare Road. No scholar patrol, flowing traffic and children running recklessly after school. Taxi drivers from the area know how hectic it gets after school and should be aware. That school really needs a scholar patrol.”
Sheryl Munoo said: “Devastating news, so sorry to the parents and families.”
