South African rapper Da L.E.S, whose real name is Leslie Jonathan Mampe Jr., has moved to the United States to recuperate under the care of his mother and take advantage of its superior healthcare options.

Responsible for hits like “Lifestyle” and “Summer Time”, Da L.E.S is a renowned icon, rapper, songwriter, and producer. With a career spanning over two decades, the "North God" artist has established himself as one of the most influential figures in the local hip-hop scene.

The “Heaven” hitmaker suffered a stroke on July 26, 2024, on the morning of his birthday and was hospitalised. This also resulted in the rapper not attending his birthday celebration, which was scheduled for that day.

His family later released a statement, saying that while he was in stable condition, it was a challenging time for his loved ones. They also asked the public to remember him in their prayers and thoughts.

Da L.E.S opened up about his health struggles since the stroke. In November 2024, his family shared an Instagram post on his behalf, giving an update on his recovery and thanking fans for their support and well-wishes.

It read: “He expresses deep gratitude for being alive, saying it’s a true miracle and thanks God for his strength. ‘I owe it all to God.

“Da L.E.S is incredibly thankful for the outpouring of love, support and prayers from his fans, friends and everyone who has reached out. He will continue to update everyone on his healing process and appreciates all the continued encouragement.

“Healing takes time, but he’s staying positive and focused on a full recovery.

Following his stroke, there was a plea for donations to contribute to the rapper’s medical bills. Da L.E.S's industry friends and business associates took it upon themselves as a kind gesture of support for their friend.

According to a "Zimoja" report, after the 39-year-old veteran rapper left the hospital, he stayed at his Johannesburg home and has since relocated to his birthplace in Washington, D.C.

A close family friend reportedly shared that his mother has lived in Washington, D.C., for years. Da L.E.S was born in the States and frequently visited his mother there; hence, it is a familiar environment for him.
