Radio personality DJ Sbu, whose real name is Sbusiso Leope, has announced his resignation from Radio 2000’s breakfast show.

The decision, unveiled on Monday, February 24, comes as a surprise to many after Sbu's recent resurgence in the radio scene, a platform he last occupied with prominence in 2015.

Taking to his social media platforms, Sbu shared his heartfelt message with listeners and fans, revealing the contemplation that led to his decision.

“To the esteemed listeners of Radio 2000 and the broader South African community, this serves to inform you that after much reflection and consideration, I have made the decision to resign as a morning radio host at Radio 2000,” he wrote.

His resignation arrives ahead of his contractual end date, which was due to wrap up on March 30, 2025.

The radio host expressed gratitude for the rich experiences garnered during his time at the SABC station, noting the connections he fostered with his audience.

“This choice has not been an easy one, as my time at Radio 2000 has been filled with invaluable experiences, cherished memories, and the joy of connecting with our wonderful audience,” Sbu stated, emphasising his appreciation for the support he received from colleagues and listeners alike.

Preparations are underway for a new breakfast show that Sbu is excited to launch on an alternative platform starting on April 1.

This impending project represents a new chapter in his illustrious career and a chance to engage his loyal fanbase in fresh, innovative ways.

Sbu's exit is notable, especially considering his dramatic return to the radio scene in March 2024, where he stepped into the role at Radio 2000 following the departure of veteran presenter Glen Lewis.

The station hailed Sbu’s comeback as a turning point, noting that “DJ Sbu is back on radio after almost a decade away and he promises that South Africa’s mornings will never be the same again”.

Alongside Nathi Ndamase and Lelo Mzaca, Sbu reignited the excitement surrounding morning radio.

Before his stint at Radio 2000, Sbu's radio career faced hurdles, including a controversial exit from Metro FM in 2015 over issues surrounding the promotion of his energy drink, MoFaya.

His aspirations for a return to the SABC became a reality, showcasing his resilience and determination in the industry.

With his track record and undeniable charisma, many are keenly anticipating what innovative ideas Sbu will bring to the table as he carves a niche for himself in a new setting.

SABC was approached for comment regarding Sbu's resignation, but no response was available at the time of publishing.
