The Brasse Vannie Kaap (BVK) documentary, written and directed by Lauren Scholtz, brings to life the essence of the iconic hip hop group that took the Cape Flats by storm in the 1990s.

The documentary by Dala Films received an accolade at the Berlin Indie Film Festival 2024 - Best director documentary.

The film walks viewers through the rise of BVK, a group that made Afrikaans hip-hop their own by using Afrikaaps, the local slang, to voice the stories of their community. Good Hope FM’s DJ Ready D (real name Deon Daniels) was a part of the group; he appears in the documentary which is streaming on Showmax.

Speaking to IOL, DJ Ready D expressed his excitement over the documentary’s international recognition. “ What truly amazes me is the global interest in our journey, our stories, and even our language, music, and the culture surrounding it,” he said.

The legendary DJ and music producer expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the documentary from director Scholtz for her vision and dedication to all the individuals who shared their perspectives in interviews, and helped bring the project to life.

“Mobilizing a project like this is no small feat, especially with members and contributors spread across the country—and even across the world. But despite the distance, BVK remains a collective effort.

“I want to acknowledge every member, past and present, for playing a role in shaping what BVK represents. This documentary is not just about the past; it’s about the legacy we continue to build. And this recognition only fuels our commitment to carrying that legacy forward,” he said.

Scholtz added: "We are so honoured by this award and feel proud that a culturally important South African story such as this is being recognised internationally.

"And we hope it inspires others to go out and tell their stories because we have so many to tell."
