Spring is finally here and with it comes new captivating and thought-provoking television shows.
With this in mind, here are some new productions to enjoy this September.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (S2)
South African actress Sophia Nomvete features as a dwarven princess in this series which brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. She is joined by the likes of Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur and Maxim Baldry, amongst several others.
This epic drama takes viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.
∎ “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The Girls on the Bus (S1)
This political drama series centres around four female journalists who follow every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates. They discover that friendship, love and a scandal have the potential to destabilise not only the presidency but an entire democracy.
It is inspired by the show’s co-creator, Amy Chozick’s 2018 memoir titled, “Chasing Hillary”.
The show sees Melissa Benoist, Carla Gugino, Christina Elmore and Natasha Behnam as the reporters. They are joined by Brandon Scott, Scott Foley, Griffin Dunne and Hettienne Park, amongst several others.
∎ The first episode of “The Girls on the Bus” premieres on M-Net ( DStv channel 101), on September 4, at 8pm, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday night. It will also be available on DStv Catch Up.
Tell Me Lies (S2)
Fans of this intoxicating drama will finally get some closure as season two is set to drop after almost two years of the show’s last offering.
It is based on Carola Lovering’s best-selling novel of the same name.
The show centres on the tumultuous relationship between college students Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) over eight years.
A tragedy at their school, Baird College, sees them quickly getting pulled into a mess of betrayal, sex and lies.
The couple’s addictive entanglement has devastating consequences as it permanently alters their lives and the lives of everyone around them.
∎ “Tell Me Lies” premieres on Disney + on September 4.
Law, Love & Betrayal (S1)
Award-winning veteran TV presenter and actor, Nimrod Nkosi helms a star-studded cast for this new local legal drama.
He is joined by “Scandal!” actress Dineo Rasedile, Safta-winning actress and presenter Pearl Modiadie, Anelisa Phewa and Siya Sepotokele.
“Law, Love & Betrayal” will centre on a tough township lawyer, Gugu Mabaso (Rasedile), who breaks into a chic, family-run Sandton company and discovers that everyone there has secrets, just like her.
Nkosi is cast as Gatsha Gumede, the founder of Gumede & Associates, where a succession dispute is developing.
Modiadie plays Ayanda Gumede-Williams, the ruthless and ambitious daughter of Gatsha, and one of the most intelligent attorneys in the firm.
∎ “Law, Love & Betrayal” premières on Showmax on September 5, with new episodes releasing every Thursday.
'The Perfect Couple (S1)
Nicole Kidman is at the centre of yet another whodunnit case in this murder mystery. She shares the small screen with an illustrious cast which includes Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning and Eve Hewson. They will be joined by Meghann Fahy, Michael Beach, Jack Reynor and Billy Howle, among others.
“The Perfect Couple” is based on Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel of the same name.
It centres around Amelia Sacks (Hewson), who is about to marry into the wealthy Nantucket-Winbury family. This is despite the disapproval of their matriarch (Kidman), who is a famous novelist.
But when a body is found on the beach during the weekend of the wedding, everyone becomes a suspect as secrets are revealed.
∎ “The Perfect Couple” premieres on Netflix on September 5.
