South African singer-songwriter musician Steve Hofmeyr has been left “sick with disappointment”, after only 8000 tickets were sold for his Cape Town IKOON concert, forcing it to be postponed.
The concert was meant to take place on March 29 at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium, which has a capacity of 55,000.
“I am really sick with disappointment. Yesterday was a long day. We have tried to continue with the Cape IKOON. But, as with most concerts, I'm at the mercy of promoters' cashbook and if it doesn't add up, there's little I can do about it,” wrote Hofmeyr in a Facebook post.
The musician expressed that his “biggest concern” was for those who bought tickets or incurred other durable expenses, as he had even planned a holiday around the concert.
Hofmeyr expressed gratitude to the 8000 people who bought tickets for the concert. “For us, 8000 people would be more than enough.”
The concert’s organisers, in a statement, said that they were convinced that they would have had a good turnout in the stadium as a result of the absence of major Afrikaans shows in Cape Town, especially after they had 18,000 spectators for the shows at Moreleta Campus.
“We simply cannot sustain the concert offer for the number of fans who have purchased tickets in a stadium format. We have already engaged with all the role players, and we are going ahead with the marketing campaign launch in the run-up to a new date.
Seems that Afrikaans show lovers might have been too busy or are focused on other things, such as the refugee offer extended by US President Donald Trump.
Concert organisers shared that they will be in touch with ticket holders once a new date is confirmed, and ticket holders can then decide whether they want to keep their tickets or get a refund.
