It’s time to get your groove on because music festivals are back.

One of Joburg’s most anticipated queer festivals, Queertopia, is coming back with a bang and this time with an international act to shake up the city.

Following a successful event in 2024, which featured Mzansi’s finest vocalists, including Thandiswa Mazwai and Buhlebendalo, this year’s line-up features international singer-songwriter Ego Ella May, who will headline the festival.

Known for her poetic lyrics and smooth, emotive vocals, Ella May will likely perform songs from her recent project, “Fieldnotes: Complete”.

Released in December last year, this album features hit singles “Breathe”, “Higher Self” and “Why?”, to name a few.

Founded by Andiswa Dlamini and Kefiloe Siwisa, Queertopia is an event that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

The goal is to create a safe and inclusive community, raise awareness through talks and allow people to express themselves through fashion, music and arts and crafts.

Queertopia will be taking place at the historic Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg on March 1 and 2.

“Constitutional Hill has hosted Queertopia for the past three years, serving as a reminder of South Africa’s journey to democracy and endorsing the rights of all citizens.

“This aligns with Queertopia's role in upholding human rights for the queer community,” said the organisers.

“The festival boasts an exciting range of activities, from music, art, food and wellness experiences, ensuring there's something for everyone.”

Festivalgoers can look forward to local acts like  Bongeziwe Mabandla, Langa Mavuso, Lia Butler, Zoe Modiga, DJ Tshegu, Litsmo, Dato Seiko and many more.
