Durban - There was excitement at Menzi High School in uMlazi as matric pupils wrote English Paper 3, their final paper yesterday.

Although the exams officially end next week, Menzi matric pupils were delighted that their exams were over and said they expected good results.

Principal Muntu Ntombela said the school was aiming for a 100% pass rate for the 11th consecutive year.

“For us, 100% is given, but we are working for a 100% Bachelor pass for all pupils. Teachers worked very hard and had sleepless nights. They formed study groups and held afternoon classes. As a school, we will excel in all subjects but Maths Paper 2 gave pupils a hard time because many did not finish the paper.”

Pupil Sisanda Cebekhulu said she made a lot of sacrifices in her matric year. Sisanda, who wants to become a chartered accountant, said she was happy that she was done with high school.

“The study process was very long and tiring, but our teachers were always there for us.

“We would arrive at 8am every day, even during the holidays when other schools were on a break. There was no rest for us. I’m very happy that now I am done with school, but I’m also nervous because I don’t know what the outside world has for me because here they were supportive. Because accounting is my greatest strength, I want to become a chartered accountant and wish to pursue it at Wits.”

Fellow pupil Siyabonga Mchunu, who wants to pursue medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, said he wanted to give back to the upcoming matric class of 2023 as he understood the struggle and stress of the year.

“I’m hopeful they will take me at the Mandela School of Medicine as it is my dream to be a medical doctor.

“I also wish to come back to the school to assist the class of 2023 next year, because even the class of 2019 came back to assist us,” said Siyabonga.

Nhlanhla Mngadi said he was expecting As in physical sciences, accounting, maths and life sciences.

“I am at the best school probably in the region, that helped me a lot. Looking at the work we have done as the school I have absolutely no doubt that we will get a 100% pass rate,” said Nhlanhla.
