The biggest problem facing BMW's M division is the competition it faces from a host of German custom tuners, notably AC Schnitzer, which has released this uprated X3 well ahead of the "official" 2012 X3 M.
Just for starters, Schnitzer's engine geeks have tweaked the two-litre turbodiesel xDrive20d from 135 to 160kW, and they're working on kits for the xDrive30d as well as the six-cylinder 2.8i and 3.5i petrol models, for release later in 2011.
But no matter which engine you specify you'll get AC Schnitzer's latest X3 fashion accessories - a new front bumper with lip spoiler, chrome trim for the side skirts, a rear apron, a roof spoiler and fancy new exhaust tailpipe trims.
Lowered suspension is also on the menu, garnished with your choice of 18, 19, 20 or 22" rims, shod with performance rubber in appropriately low profiles.
Interior trim options include aluminium trim accents, alloy sports pedals and velour floor mats (no Cyril, we're not kidding) with a new sports steering wheel in the pipeline.
