Subaru has promised us the first in-the-metal concept of its rear-wheel drive sports coupé, now code-named BRZ, which it is developing in collaboration with Toyota, at the Frankfurt motor show in mid-September.

It will display a technology concept which it has named the BRZ Prologue at the show, which is likely to be very close to the final layout, since production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of next year.

BRZ, it says, stands for the Boxer engine, Rear-wheel drive and Zenith - signifying the passion of the development team for their new baby.

All we've seen so far is this ghosted computer image of the drivetrain layout, which does, however, point up one important characteristic: since the "flat four" engine no longer has to drive the front wheels, it can be moved back, way behind the front axle, giving the BRZ perfect weight distribution and keeping all the weight between the axles - a promising recipe for a very agile little sports car.
