Subaru has lifted the lid on its version of the rear-wheel drive sports coupe that it's co-developing with Toyota. Although this is technically a concept car, set to show face at the Los Angeles Motor Show later this month, we can't envision much changing as it morphs into the imminent BRZ production car.
Although it vaguely resembles its Toyota cousin, the Subaru BRZ concept has a slightly boxier look and its quad tailpipes and 'ironing board' rear spoiler give it an unmistakable boy-racer flavour.
While details are scarce at this stage, Subaru has admitted that the BRZ will be powered by a new 2-litre direct injection Boxer engine. If the recent alleged specification leak for the BRZ's Toyota twin are anything to go by, you can expect the car to weigh around 1200kg and the engine to put out around 147kW and 205Nm.
A big departure from Subaru's all-wheel drive policy, the BRZ's Subaru-developed chassis has a rear wheel drive configuration. This, and its promised low centre of gravity, should ensure top-notch handling.
The final production model is expected to break loose at the Tokyo Motor Show in December, before rolling out to international markets early next year. We're currently awaiting confirmation on whether the BRZ is heading for South Africa.
