Now that they have taken over the whole Viper project, the performance junkies at Chrysler's Street and Racing Technology division got together with some of their racing buddies to create their version of the ultimate track-day special - the SRT Viper Time Attack.
The TA, as it has inevitably become known, will make its public debut at the New York auto show on 27 March.
Unusually for an American muscle-car, SRT have left the 8.4-litre V10 alone. Maybe they figure 472kW and 815Nm - which they claim is the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world - are, to quote Sir Henry Royce, adequate.
What they have done is to update the running gear, using mostly off-the-shelf components from SRT; the suspension features two-mode Bilstein Damptronic shock absorbers with firmer levels of damping and a smaller spread between modes than on the Viper GTS models, as well as race-spec anti-roll bars.
UPRATED BRAKES
The SRT whitecoats collaborated with Brembo to increase the thermal capacity of the brakes and improve heat dissipation under extreme conditions. The brake callipers are black anodised, with the Viper logo in orange, and Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires are mounted on lightweight, matte black multi-spoke Sidewinder II rims.
The standard aluminium structural X-brace over the engine has been replaced by lighter carbon-fibre brace that effectively ties the four corners of the engine compartment for improved torsional rigidity.
The TA is finished in an exclusive shade of orange with black 'TA' logos behind both front wheels and a black Stryker logo on the front fascia, while the aerodynamics package includes carbon-fibre front splitters and rear spoiler, and a carbon-fibre rear applique to accentuate the extra width of the car.
(VERY) LIMITED EDITION
Sabelt racing seats with lightweight fibreglass shells created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer moulding system are standard, upholstered in premium ballistic fabric and with fittings for three or six-point safety harnesses.
The standard black interior combination includes orange contrast stitching on the seats, instrument panel, centre stack, console, parking brake, shifter boot, shifter head, steering wheel and upper doors.
Kerb weight is an estimated 1522kg, about 5kg lighter than a standard SRT Viper.
Only 33 SRT Viper TA's will be made, starting in the third quarter of 2013, at the Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit, beginning in third quarter 2013 at recommended retail of about $116 000 (R1.07 million) each.
