Police are on the hunt for an armed gang following a cash-in-transit heist in KwaZulu-Natal late on Monday afternoon.

Kyle van Reenen of Ensure Security said multiple armed suspects ambushed the vehicle on the R74 near Stanger on the KZN north coast.

It is alleged that the suspects opened fire on the CIT vehicle and one security officer sustained a single gunshot wound. The gang used explosives to gain access to the cash.

"The second officer sustained moderate injuries during the incident. Both officers were transported to a facility under the care of IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support paramedics," said Samantha Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue.

The roadway was closed to traffic while police and investigating teams combed the scene.

This marks the second cash-in-transit heist on the KZN north coast within a few days.

On Saturday, police and emergency personnel attended to a heist on the R102 between Mandeni and Gingindlovu.

Meyrick said armed suspects opened fire on a CIT vehicle and escort vehicle, forcing the escort vehicle from the road before using explosives to gain access to the back of the CIT vehicle.

"The suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and stolen firearms. Two security officers from the escort vehicle sustained minor injuries, and were transported to a nearby facility for further care by IPSS Medical Rescue," she said.

A cash van was blown up in a heist earlier this month that claimed the life of a Chatsworth security guard.

Last month, a Chatsworth school security guard was killed in a cash heist on the N2 near the NPC cement factory. Nokuthula Mbanjwa was killed in the crossfire between the suspects and security officers. She would have turned 40 just days before she died.

It is believed that the cash-carrying truck was pushed off the roadway by assailants before it was blown up and cash taken.
