The new ANC Youth League leadership in KwaZulu-Natal says it supports the reconfiguration of the ANC in the province.

Speaking after his election as the chairperson of the young comrades in the province, Ntokozo Ngcobo said the provincial youth body was fully behind the national leadership’s decision to reconfigure the provincial structure.

“As the new leadership of the youth league, we fully support the decision of the national leadership to reconfigure the ANC in the province. We believe that the national leadership applied its mind and we will support whatever decision it is taking because the intention is to renew and revive the provincial structure to ready itself for the 2026 local government elections,” said Ngcobo.

Although the national executive committee has taken the decision to reconfigure the KwaZulu-Natal top six, it has yet to name who will constitute the reconfigured structure. The delay in naming the new structure has sparked rumours that, within the national leadership, there are those who were lobbying against the decision.

The ANC Youth League conference which was marred by delays finally elected the new leadership on Monday morning.

Ntokozo Ngcobo who before the conference was eThekwini regional chairperson was elected new provincial chairperson while Lulama Mabude from Moses Mabhida region (Pietermaritzburg) took the secretary position. Phindile Mdada from the General Gizenga Mpanza region (KwaDukuza) will deputise Ngcobo while Siyabonga Mzenda from the Musa Dladla region (Richards Bay) was elected as deputy secretary. The Treasurer position went to Siphelele Masuku from the Josiah Gumede region (Ladysmith).

The league has been without leadership in recent years after several postponements due to unresolved issues. The last leadership was led by former Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu as the provincial chairperson and Thanduxolo Sabelo as the secretary in 2022. The last attempt to hold the conference was in July 2023 and this was cancelled at the last minute by the national leadership which directed that all conferences must be halted with the focus on last year’s general elections.

Later on Monday, the delegates are expected to vote for the additional members who will constitute the league’s provincial executive committee.
