Pretoria - The Tshwane district has been applauded as the first region in Gauteng to surpass the 60% mark of fully vaccinated senior citizens between the ages of 50 and 59, and also 60 years and above.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the district, as compared with the other four regions in the province, had seen a significant increase in the number of those fully vaccinated in the age bracket of 60 years old and above as of March 28.
Bokaba said: “The national vaccine roll-out provincial dashboard indicated that 199 809, which translates to 61.25% of the targeted 326 208 senior citizens, have been fully vaccinated either through the Johnson & Johnson single dose or two doses of Pfizer.”
He said the number of fully vaccinated people between 50 and 59 years, which was the second highest, was sitting at 60.31% out of the targeted 316 540 individuals.
“The number of individuals who are fully vaccinated in the 35 to 49 age group is standing at 392 128 or 48% of the targeted 812 149, while only 26% of the 18 to 34 age cohort has received the Johnson & Johnson single dose or two doses of Pfizer,” he said.
The city commended senior citizens for taking the lead and urged other age groups to follow suit by getting vaccinated to protect themselves and those around them.
Meanwhile, the total number of fully vaccinated individuals in Tshwane as of March 21 was standing at 1 134 472. This was from the 2 126 383 vaccines administered.
Yesterday, the city announced that it would continue to embark on its ward-based Covid-19 outreach campaign for the next two weeks.
The campaign runs from Tuesdays to Thursdays with a specific focus on regions 1 and 6.
“Apart from screening, testing and vaccinating members of the community, the team will also provide other health services such as HIV testing, blood pressure monitoring and condom distribution, issue chronic medication and/or do referrals to the nearest health facility,” the city said.
