The last Men’s Padel4Good tournament of the year was befitting of a finale show following the all-out action on display at the Virgin Active arena in Paarden Eiland on Friday.
Ultimately, Richard Bendel and Daniel Brauer walked away victors after beating Damian Gomes and Kapil Singh 5-1 in an action-packed main event that left on-lookers and supporters on the edge of their seats.
Bendel and Brauer formed a formidable partnership, keeping their composure even when their backs were against their wall.
Bendel and Brauer drew first blood before Gomes and Singh found their feet and started building good momentum with some excellent shot selection and athleticism.
Two decisive moments in the game were when Bendel showcased his incredible defensive shots which seemed to have turned the tide for his team.
When asked how he turned those points around, Bendel quickly credited his cricketing days.
“I don’t know, maybe it was pure Lady Luck,” said Bendel with a chuckle.
“No, I was a cricketer and when those slams came I just blocked it,” said Bendel, who managed to turn two points in his team’s favor and swing the momentum back on their side before closing the game out.
One of the standout features of the night was the number of new faces from all corners of Cape Town donning Padel4Good gear.
It served as a testament to how the sporting charity has grown since its inception in March last year.
Padel4Good continues to support and empower homes and charities across the Western Cape through funds raised at these events and with the help of sponsors.
Bendel, who played his first event last night, was happy to be a part of something special.
“Firstly, what an amazing place to play. This show is well-organized, there are nice facilities and great sponsors. I am grateful to be part of Padel4Good. This is my first time. Thank you,” added Bendel.
Today, the ladies, rated between 1.5 and 3.5 on the PlayTomic App, will close out the 2024 Padel4Good calendar at the same venue starting at 12 pm.
