CAPE TOWN – Just days after reportedly ending their association with the South African Sevens team as the main title sponsor, Steinhoff International has also withdrawn as a sponsor of the annual Varsity Cup rugby competition.

Steinhoff has enjoyed a long and successful partnership with the Varsity Cup, but on Wednesday, they announced they would no longer be involved with the competition.

This follows the financial fall of the integrated retail giant, which has operations in Africa, the USA, Europe and Australia.

According to Duitser Bosman, the CEO of the Varsity Cup – of which FNB is the main sponsor – a process of exploring new sponsorship opportunities is already under way.

The 11th edition of the Varsity Cup tournament, which includes the Cup, Shield, Young Guns and “Koshuis Rugby” competitions, will continue as planned, starting on Monday, January 29.

The premier intervarsity competition features 16 of the best university teams in a challenge for top honours each year.

Steinhoff came on board as Blitzboks sponsor at the end of 2015, and were in their third year of a three-year deal.

According to reports, the current World Sevens Series champions will now wear the #LoveRugby logo on their jerseys.
