Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki will take charge of Bafana Bafana for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers at the Free State against Egypt on Sunday.

The move to temporarily appoint the former Bafana boss, who was most recently sacked as Technical Director at Marumo Gallants, came after Bafana coach Hugo Broos requested that his assistant, initially slated to help with the fixture, be excused.

“Remember, in the last NEC meeting, the SAFA technical committee recommended coach Molefi Ntseki after he was interviewed to head the technical development of SAFA, specifically the academies and junior teams as a manager,” SAFA Technical Committee Chairman Jack Maluleke said.

“After we got information that the South African senior national team coach requested that Helman Mkhalele must be recused from this team because we have the priority of Bafana Bafana playing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin in a few weeks’ time, we agreed."

The 55-year-old Ntseki will be assisted by SA U20 coach Raymond Mdaka and will aim to continue Bafana's 18-match unbeaten run against the Pharaohs, despite fielding a squad largely comprising young players.

Ntseki was the national team coach from 2019 until 2021, taking charge of just nine matches, before parting with Bafana after failing to qualify the team for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Senegal.
