Golden Arrows claimed a 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants at the Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday to solidify their spot at the top of the Betway Premiership.
The Mabhudi Khenyeza’s Arrows came into the game looking to build on their strong start to the season, after pulling off a shock 2-0 away win against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday.
However, Gallants, who lost their opening encounter against Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs last Saturday, were the ones who started the game like a house on fire.
Attackers Sekela Sithole and Siyabulela Shai gave the Arrow's defence problems with their pace and trickery.
Gallants continued to push forward, but struggled to convert their chances as Arrows goalkeeper Edward Maova kept his side in the game.
Sithole had a golden opportunity to score in the 12th minute of the game. A lovely through ball left him with only the keeper to beat, but he failed to convert his chance.
After a sustained period under pressure, Arrows found themselves up-front after striker Knox Mutizwa found the back of the net after a long ball from goalkeeper Maova.
After the goal, Arrows continued to push forward and made it 2-0 at the stroke of halftime after an unmarked Nduduzo Sibiya headed the ball into the back of the net from a free-kick.
After the break, Gallants started pushing more numbers forward to get back in the game. However, the Arrows defence remained resolute.
Gallants could count themselves unlucky after being denied what appeared to be a penalty in the dying minutes of the game after Siyabulela Shai was brought down inside the box.
Meanwhile, in Polokwane, goals from Puleng Marena and Sibusisiso Tshabalala were enough to give Polokwane City a 2-0 win over new Premiership outfit Magesi FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
