The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education will be investigating a Chatsworth creche and how a toddler suffered head injuries while in its care.

Two-year-old Aariya Sewnarain is alleged to have fallen from a balcony last week Thursday at a creche in Arena Park, Chatsworth.

Aariya underwent surgery at Albert Luthuli Hospital after sustaining a fracture on her skull.

Muzi Mahlambi, spokesperson for the education department, said they would be investigating the circumstances that led to the child's injury.

"We are on a massive registration campaign to have all creches registered with the department. Whether they receive a subsidy from us or not, it is the issue of compliance.

"We will send officials to investigate this creche and see if it is registered and the status of its compliance," said Mahlambi.

Police spokesperson, Captain Ntathu Ndlovu, confirmed that the offices of the Chatsworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences were investigating a case in terms of Section 32 of the Child Care Act 38 of 2005 after the two-year-old allegedly fell off a balcony.

Aariya's dad, Atholl Sewnarain, said that they were seeking legal advice on the course of action to be taken.

"It has been a traumatic time for the family. Our focus at the moment is our baby's recovery. The injuries were severe. She needs time to heal. We thank God for saving our only child.

"As parents we want the best for our child. We would never want this to happen to any other child or for any parent to go through this trauma," he said.

Recalling the events of last week Thursday, Sewnarain said his wife received a call from the creche to say Aariya had a fall and got hurt.

"When we got there Aariya had been cleaned up but you could see she had injuries on her face and head. Aariya was taken to the family doctor who advised us to monitor Aariya and if she started to vomit to take her to hospital.

"Aariya began vomiting and was taken to RK Khan Hospital where doctors did x-rays and a CT scan and found she had a fracture on her skull and blood clots between her brain and skull. Aariya was transferred to Albert Luthuli Hospital where she underwent surgery last Friday," he said.

He claimed they were given different stories at the creche as to what happened and how Aariya got injured.

"But I saw camera footage of Aariya falling from an upstairs balcony where she was unattended and playing alone," claimed Sewnarain.

The owner of the creche declined to comment.
