The case against the 42-year-old police sergeant based at Eldorado Park police station in Johannesburg, Mandla Buthelezi has been postponed to February 26.
Buthelezi who shot and killed his 22-year-old girlfriend Chenay Keppler will remain in police custody. He appeared at the Protea Magistrate Court on Monday.
Ipid spokesperson, Lizzy Suping said the Sergeant, who turned the gun on himself after shooting Keppler, was discharged from the hospital and is detained at Moroka SAPS.
“The officer allegedly fired several shots at his 22-year-old girlfriend through the window at her residence in Eldorado Park, following a domestic dispute. After the incident, the accused officer fled the scene,” she said.
Founder of #MyLifeMatters, and MMC for finance Margaret Arnolds joined the Keppler’s family in court on Monday.
Arnolds said she has advocated for the station commander to leave.
“I have advocated for the station commander to leave. I have not done it today or yesterday, but I have done it two years ago where I parked outside for 100 days and saying Maluleke must go. Maluleke knew that Mandla is a criminal, he knew what Mandla was capable of doing and Maluleke did not act. This is nothing personal against him,” she insisted.
Peter Rafferty, a community leader from Eldorado Park, said there has been a major disconnect between the SAPS and the community caused by the current station commander.
“Crime has spiralled out of control and most community members lost faith in our local station, serious changes need to be made at Eldorado Park SAPS in terms of management. Brigadier Mkhacani Maluleka must go,” said Rafferty.
